This is not the purpose of meditation and should be discouraged. The purpose of meditation is to calm the mind in order to see things as they really are, which is impermanance, suffering and non-self. A result of meditation will be heightened awareness of the present moment

I have been meditating (TM) for a number of years now and it is very effective in helping you focus, prioritise and relax - 20 mins is as good as a nights sleep! While it does not induce altered states of consciousness as you say, it does raise awareness and can give perspective ...
There are simpler ways to get an introduction to meditation and decide for yourself. This is a short program with results in days if that is what you want for starters - I put a review on blogger, if that helps
