There is a little arrow on the pellet ofon the housing that points in the direction of flow. Most like Ford is pellet down into block. but look for the arrow it's there. (need to know what car) good luck
Remove the top water line from the radiator to the water pump. The thermostat is found there.
The thermostat could be installed backward, the radiator could be plugged, the water pump could be worn out or you could have a warped head and bad head gasket.
The thermostat controls only the temperature of the water.

Drain the water from the cooling system. Remove the water supply line to the thermostat. Remove the thermostat housing bolts. Remove the thermostat. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.
