This question makes no sense at all. Its like asking how do you put a burger back in to the cow. or can you take water out of the sun? you put Layout/s in your webpages when your are building them in your webpage design program like dreamweaver or frontpage, and then you upload your webpage/s and all child/parent files to your server using file transfer protocol(ftp) where you will be hosting your website.

How do we connect our new website to the internet once we have a domain name and host?

Once it's hosted, it's on the Internet. Go to the URL you purchased (your domain name, with http:// in front of it), and you should see a placeholder page. To put stuff on the website, you have to use FTP to transfer your content from your local computer to the host so it will show up. First you have to create the content in HTML using some sort of program like Dreamweaver. It would be a good idea to get somebody who's done this before to show you how.

How do you do FTP?

Most Linux systems will have ftp available as a command line option. Try entering "man ftp" in terminal mode to make sure you have it, and to learn the various ftp commands. Typically, you will have to know the ftp site name and the user name and password assigned to you for that ftp site. You will start the ftp session by typing something like: ftp www.mysite.net At the ftp prompt, enter your user name and password, if the server requests that you sign in anonymously place "anonymous" or "ftp" in the username field and leave the password field blank. Then use the ftp commands (e.g 'ls' 'put' 'get' 'cd' 'chmod') to transfer and maintain files at your site. If you prefer a GUI interface, there may be some X Windows ftp clients available for download. Google 'ftp Linux' and see what you can find. I prefer the plain command line version. Much quicker and easier once you learn the commands.
