What do Muslims and Arabs have in common?

Arabs are people who live on or very close to the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle Eastern area between Europe and Africa. Muslims are followers of Islam, a religion that began in the Arabian Peninsula. Therefore, most Arabs are Muslim, because that is the primary religion in that area, but less than a quarter of Muslims are Arabs due to the large population of South Asian, Persian, and Indonesian Muslims. Some Arabs have other religions, and many Muslims live elsewhere in the world. Arab=Race Muslim=Religion

A Muslim is a practitioner of Islam, so if Muslims did not exist, Islam would no longer be practiced (just like the Ancient Greek Religion with Zeus is no longer practiced). The Arabs were the first Muslims and were responsible for spreading Islam throughout North Africa and the Middle East.

What did the Abbasid Dynasty do to help soften class lines between Arabs and non-Arabs?

The Abbassids allowed the Mawali (Non-Arab Muslims) to actively participate in governance and exempted them from taxation (like other Muslims). These changes from Umayyad policy paved the way for equality between Arab Muslims and Mawali.
