A sajjadah is a small, often portable, rug that Muslims use for prayer. "Sajjadah" is an Arabic word. Other languages have different words for the same rug. For example, in Urdu it is called a Janamaz.

Muslims don't HAVE to pray on a sajjadah. They can pray on any clean surface, like a clean floor, grass, carpet, etc. Nevertheless, many Muslims like to pray on Sajjadahs because it ensures that the surface they are praying on is clean.
