Sharks have three different ways of reproducing, oviparity, viviparity, and ovoviviparity. During oviparity they lay eggs in the ocean. During viviparity they nourish the pups through placental links, much like mammals, and the pups are born fully functional. During ovoviviparity, eggs develop inside the oviduct of the mother and then hatch inside the oviduct where they finish their development using the remaining egg content to make pups born fully functional.

Male sharks don't have gonads so they use 2 tiny under-fins to help press up against the female and directly inseminate her. Then at a much later point, depending on the breed of shark, either eggs are laid or a pup is given birth to in a dangerous fashion. When tiger shark pups hatch in the womb, there are many hatched. But one or two large ones will eat the rest before being released.
