Professor Hawking can communicate through a specially designed electronic interface operating a synthetic voice generator, through which he can select words and pre-generated phrases from a menu. He used to operate it by hand but as his disorder progressed and he weakened, the control was shifted to a switch operated by his cheek muscle. Engineers continue to work on a possible future interface which could exploit brain waves or facial expressions.

He was offered use of a synthesized voice which was less robotic-sounding and more realistic or more like the human voice, but refused, partly to maintain his widely-recognized signature digital voice.
