The tiger is not a so called running animal. Dogs can run for a long time without getting tired and wolves will occasionally follow their prey for several kilometers - if they are very hungry. African wild dogs sometimes even follow potential prey for distance of more than 5 and 10 kilometers before they catch it.

This is not the case for the White Tiger. The White Tigers (Bengal Tigers) sneaks upon their prey, silently because of their pliable shoulder blades (scapula) which allow them to walk very close to the ground - almost like a snake. This can be seen in some of the videos provided in the video section of this webpage. The Tiger hunts alone, unlike the lions hunting in herds. Tigers wouldn't be able to hunt alone unless they were so much stronger than lions that they are.

The Romans put tigers and lions together to watch them fight and the tiger always won.

Capturing preyAll tigers, perhaps with the exception of the Snow Tiger, will fail to capture their prey if they don't succeed in coming into a distance of the prey of no less than approximately 30-40 feet (10-12 meters). The hunt starts when the Tiger suddenly explodes in its movement attacking the prey. The hunt is always very short.

The Tiger will try to catch the prey on the first 120-180 feet (40-60 meters) otherwise it will have to give up. The endurance of the Bengal Tiger is perhaps slightly better than the endurance of the Siberian and other Tigers. When they get really close to the prey they jump on top of it and grab it with their forelimbs.

Killing preyWhat happens now depend on the size of the prey. If they prey is relatively small it will be bitten in its neck. In this case the powerful canine teeth penetrate the neck of the prey and crush the prey's spine damaging nerves - and the prey dies. If you don't know how tough the skin of a cow or a horse can be, try to cut in a newly died cow whenever you get the opportunity.

If it's a larger prey the neck region is often too thick for this tactics and the Tiger turns around and goes for the throat and squeezes the air tube until it is broken or cannot recover from the squeezing. The squeezing is primarily performed with the teeth next to the large canine teeth. The Tiger keeps on squeezing until the prey dies from suffocation.

Female White Tigers and their cubsFor periods the Snow Tiger can survive on relatively small prey, but if for instance we are talking about a pregnant female tiger it needs large prey to fulfill its energy demand. A female with cubs has to kill a large animal approximately every four days to feed herself and her cubs. Eating and digesting foodWhen the prey has been killed and the Tiger needs to open the prey it uses teeth that in position corresponds to our molar teeth. To do this it need to keep it heads in an angle to the prey and use some of it most underlying teeth. Some of the Tigers teeth constitutes an almost scissor like system enabling it to cut the meat rather effectively. The good thing about meat is that it is very easy to digest.

Unlike vegetables and other green types of food it doesn't need to be grinded in thousands of pieces to be processed in the stomach and in the guts. This is an advantage to the tiger that don't need food in its stomach to be digested for several days.

Tigers are pure carnivores. They prefer hunting large ungulates such as chital, sambar, gaur, and to a small extent also barasingha, water buffalo, nilgai, serow and takin. Among the medium-sized prey species they frequently kill wild boar, and occasionally hog deer, muntjac and Gray langur. Small prey species such as porcupines, hares and peafowl are also hunted and form a very small part in their diet. Sometimes, they also prey on domestic livestock too that wander off into the jungles

They stay hidden and move near the unsuspecting prey. Once they are near enough, they pounce and take the prey down. They go for the throat and strangulate their prey.

There are not many white tigers in the wild- more are in zoos where they are fed by keepers. In the wild they hunt. White tigers gather food by running and jumping and stalking.
