Two different thoughts on the subject:

  • It is an incredibly effective natural camouflage in the tall grasses of the African plains, protecting the Zebras from predators. When herds of several zebras are moving the stripes make it difficult to distinguish on animal from another. This makes it more difficult for a predator to determine where one zebra begins and another ends.
  • It was long hypothesized that zebra stripes made it hard for lions to tell where one zebra started and the next ended. However, that hypothesis has been proven false. Zebras do not have stripes for camouflage. The stripes confuse and deter biting flies, which is important for zebras because they do not have long enough fur to protect them from biting flies.

What will happen if zebras didn't have stripes?

If zebras didn't have stripes, then this animal would no longer be considered as a zebra, so it's not a zebra. "Zebra" means an African wild horse with black-and-white stripes. With the zebra meaning, if they didn't have stripes, then it's not called a zebra anymore and it would be a horse.
