A digital computer processes discrete data, an analog computer processes continuous data.

  • Discrete data (integers, character codes, boolean values, encoded floating point numbers, etc.) represent information with sharp discontinuities between represented values. Any data value not exactly encoded must be approximated by one of the nearest encoded values. Operations on discrete values are more reliable and consistent, but usually slower with identical technologies.
  • Continuous data (voltages, currents, fluid pressure, fluid flow, shaft position, shaft rotation rate, etc.) represent information by analogy. All data values (within the limits of the machine) have an equivalent representation. Operations on continuous values are less reliable and less consistent, but usually faster with identical technologies.

Analog computers are typically harder to program: they are either designed for one special purpose with the program permanently built in, or they must be "rewired" to reprogram them.

Analogue deals with signals that do not have a quantized input. They can have more values than just the values assigned to 0 and 1. Think of a sine wave. An Analogue circuit can output one. A digital circuit uses only 1 and 0, two different voltage levels. It turns values into binary.

Analog computers are also called continuous computers, as their representation of variables varies smoothly with no discontinuities during the computation. However they have less accuracy and a tendency to drift over time and with temperature.

Digital computers represent their variables using coded symbols (typically but not always binary) and change values in a computation in discrete discontinuous jumps. However they can compute to high accuracy, don't drift, and can often detect and correct their own errors before they would affect a computation.

What do electronic computer manufacturers produce?

Included in this industry are digital computers, analog computers, and hybrid digital/analog computers.

Are most computers analog machines?

No, most computers today are digital machines. Digital computers operate using discrete binary data, represented as 0s and 1s. Analog computers, on the other hand, manipulate continuous physical quantities such as voltage, current, or mechanical motion. While analog computers were used in the past, the vast majority of computers in use today are digital.

Which is faster an analog computer or a digital computer?

built with the same level of technology, analog computers are always faster but less accurate than digital computers. however as little significant work on analog computers has been done since the 1980s, they currently significantly lag behind digital computers in speed.

What is the answer for a question 'how do you do'?

Hybrid computers are computers that exhibit features of analog computers and digital computers. The digital component normally serves as the controller and provides logical operations, while the analog component normally serves as a solver of differential equations.

What is the difference between digital computers and hybrid computers?

Digital computers are purely digital, i.e. they use digital(electronic) means to process data. Hybrid computers conversely use both digital and analog technologies.

What are basic elements of digital signal processing?

The basic elements in digital signal processing are an analog to digital converter, digital signal processor, and digital to analog converter. This process can take an analog input signal, convert it to digital for processing and offer an analog output.

What is an analog modem?

A analog modem is a typical modem found in personal computers. A digital modem is similar to a DSL type modem. Most computers do not have digital modems.
