Anthropologists can help us learn about the distant past in a variety of ways. For example, by conducting studies of isolated tribes who still live like our ancestors did in many ways.
Anthropologists can help us learn about the civilizations of the distant past by researching and observing patterns of behavior in the civilizations. However, anthropologists study the social aspect of history and the social development of people, society and civilizations. A person more suited to help us learn about the distant past would be an archaeologist. Archaeologists study remaining artifacts and draw conclusions of the time period and events that took place during that time period while anthropologists study the social development of that time period. I know this because I have taken an anthropology course. (Fascinating subject by the way!)

Historians help us learn about the past by studying the past themselves. These studies include history books, audio recordings, diaries, official and unofficial documents.
Historians look for evidence about the distant past in myths and legends because myths and legends tell what people believed and understood. Historians study by looking at journals, data, diaries etc., to learn information.
