A chimp's main predators are the jungle cats that roam the jungle floor during the night. Chimps sleep in nests high in the trees to keep from getting eaten. They make them by weaving the supple branches together into a sort of platform.

Chimp males are quite violent when they feel they need to be. males in a community will cooperate to attack intruders into their territory or sometimes even to go into the neighboring community to kill a lone individual they find. Also chimps spend a lot of their time up in trees away from most dangers like leopards. They sleep in nests in trees to keep them safe at night. They are too big to be eaten by any birds or smaller predators, so they are pretty safe in trees. Chimps are also incredibly strong, so they can usually defend themselves pretty well with just their strength. Obviously they are no match for guns, but without guns and other weapons, chimps can pretty well defend themselves from all threats just with their strength and with getting away up trees.

When confronted with a mock-leopard, a group of domesticated chimpanzees formed a defensive line and employed rocks and sticks as weapons. (The males did this. The females ran away.)

What does a mother chimpazee teach her young?

Chimpanzee mothers teach their young how to survive and thrive as members of their species. Like human babies, chimp babies imitate their mother, and that is how they learn. When they are old enough, baby chimps are taught how to hunt for food, how to avoid predators, how to find water, etc. Baby chimps also learn the social hierarchy, such as how to show respect for older chimps, proper ways to show affection for others, and how to handle unfriendly chimps (how to deal with conflict).
