Because with a few exceptions, nature has determined that having a skeleton and a backbone is a good way to organize a living organism. It gives it structure, a shape and is really helpful to let it move along.

There are quite a few advantages that a backbone gives to a land animal. The animal with a backbone has a support system to walk on dry land.

Backbones actually first appeared in our smaller ancestors, but they allow for a better support structure and skeletal framework. Not to mention they protect the very vulnerable spine.
