Bacteria are one-celled organisms visible only with a microscope. You can find them in the air, on food, plants and animals, in the soil, in the water, and on just about every other surface - including your own body. Pathogenic bacteria, the harmful kind, enter the human body from the air, water or food. Once inside, these bacteria attach themselves to or invade specific cells in our respiratory system, digestive tract or any open wound. There they begin to reproduce and spread while using the human body as a source of their own nutrients and energy.

Not all bacteria do make you ill. In fact, there are bacteria that live on your skin, in your mouth and nose and in your stomach and intestines that are very beneficial, and in fact you would be very sick without them. Further, there are alot of bacteria in the soil, water, plants, etc., that are required to keep nature funtioning properly, so without them we would all die because food would stop growing, etc.

There are a few bacteria though, that can cause you to become sick. These bacteria often make specific proteins that enable them to make us sick. These are called virulence factors, and they can have all sorts of actions. Some virulence factors allow a bacteria to break through the skin or mucosal layer, other protect the bacteria from our immune system, some are just toxins that our body reacts to. The crazy thing is, we are often exposed to these bad bacteria during our life without getting sick from them. It is usually when we are exposed to very large quantities of these bad bacteria (a sick person coughs in your face) or when our immune systems are weak that we get sick from them.

There are two ways a bacterium can make you sick: 1. Bacteria can invade your cells and damage them.

2. They can also produce a toxin and kill your cells.
