It's called echolocation.. Just like it sounds, no pun intended. They make a squeal or chirp that echos off even tiny insects and allows the bat to locate them in the absence of any light. They also use it for 'navigation' to avoid flying in to things and the sense is so evolved the echolocation can even let them find their way back to the nest
