By sight. Sometimes birds will fly into glass windows. Answer: The process by which birds fly into windows and not buildings is interesting. In nature birds have learned to avoid flying into large non-reflective objects like trees (except by mis-adventure like a wind gust or while avoiding a predator when the move had no option). At the same time they were working on this trick they learned to head for flashes of light which signified gaps in the trees or leaf canopy. Buildings have both reflected light from windows and metal strips and interior lights which are behind windows. The birds head for these "tunnels" out of the area only to meet with glass or shiny metal- something they can't imagine.
