In a nutshell:

They acquire vast quantities of sugars from grain. Usually barley, wheat and rice are also commonly used. The grains are malted, which means they are sprouted and then dried. This converts the starches in the grain into sugar.

The grain is then boiled with water to create wort. During the boiling process, hops are added for flavor and preservation.

This sugar rich liquid is mixed with water and yeast and set to ferment. The yeast converts the sugars in the wort into alcohol. When the sugars are gone, the liquid is now beer and can be bottled or canned for distribution.
