It depends on the size of the dog. A large, fierce dog presents the possibility of injury or death to the cat, and cats are not stupid - so will run. I've seen cats chased by a dog and have climbed high, and with the dog barking madly and jumping not high enough to reach the cat, the cat has sat there in complete confidence that they were safe.
Cats are generally faster than dogs in terms of running speed.
Dogs will chase things that run, that is instinct.
Cats are cooooooool Cat are very popular as domestic pets. It would be a close run race between cats and dogs as to which are the most popular.
Some dogs do, some dogs don't. It's all in the training and doggy temperament. Terriers love to chase critters, it's their job, and cats can seem like critters to them. Other dogs do not care to chase anything.
