Chameleons protect themselves by change to the same color of the object they are sitting on, e.g. If a chameleon sit on a leaf which is green and the chameleon will change to green.
Changes skin color according to their surroundings to make themselves practically invisible, it is also the way they hunt.
A chameleon survives by eating and drinking water, but to protect it self it uses it's camoflauge to change it's color to blend in.

chamelons do not literally "protect" themselves from enemies, as most species have no means of defense. chameleons just change color to blend in with their surroundings.
