They peck up pieces of food with their beaks. They do not have teeth, so they do not chew. Instead, the food moves down into their crop. The crop softens the food and gets it ready to move to the stomach (proventriculus,) where it is chemically digested. After this it goes to their gizzard. The gizzard grinds what is left of the food. It then moves through the intestines, and is passed out of the body through the cloaca.
Chicken eggs have all the nutrition they need for the growth of the chick inside the shell. It is called the yolk. The yolk is the yellow part of a fresh cracked egg. A hen does not feed the egg, she just keeps it warm and protected from predators.
Hens are birds and birds have beaks. Hens use their beaks to peck at plants or bugs which they then swallow. As birds do not have teeth to chew up their food, once it is swallowed food goes down into as storage area called the 'crop' from whence it moves into a structure called the 'gizzard' which contains grit. In the gizzard the food is mashed up before progressing to the birds stomach and intestines for digestion.
Chickens need a well balance nutritional diet. This is difficult to do without a commercial feed. A good quality non medicated "layer complete" from the agricultural supply store is best, even for free range chickens. Feed the hens at least 3 ounces per day each. This can be split in two feedings. One in the AM and one feeding just prior to roosting. Always supply a continuous sources of fresh water. You may also supplement the diet with kitchen scraps and produce from the garden, even if they are not free range birds.
