Wind chimes make sound, when they are placed where there is wind or some other force that moves the tubes, by colliding with each other. Each tube is tuned to make a specific sound through its length and density, and when the tubes hit each other they make a sound and resonate to create a variety of different sounds.
The word for the sound chimes make is "tinkle."

Many metals are used to make wind chimes, and each creates a unique and different sound. Some common metals found in wind chimes are brass, aluminum and steel. However, like I said, there are several more, and a wind chime can be made out of almost anything-- what you make it with determines what unique sounds you'll hear when the chime plays.
Why not. Go closer to the chimes and you will measure more decibels. The closer the louder.

Wind-chimes.
A wind chime plays by blowing in the wind causing the wind to play the song or really sounds of the wind chimes. Some wind chimes are made for certain notes to sound when struck and if you had enough different chimes you could play a song by striking the notes to make the sounds and create a song.
In Ancient Rome, wind chimes were used in gardens and porticoes to ward off evil spirits. Wind Chimes are made out of tubes, bells, rods and other materials and make noise when the wind blows through them.
because the chimes dont come from your stereo speakers, they come from inside the dash
Bells, which work in a similar way to chimes, can be made with brass, so why can't chimes? Of course, brass creates a different sound than say, aluminum or bamboo, but thats why there are so many different materials used in wind chimes- each material has its own unique sound. I've attached a link to one chime that I found that uses brass in its construction. Check it out!
