Easter or Pascha is a celebration of Christ's death on the cross and His glorious Resurrection on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. The preparation for Easter begins with Great Lent, which is a 50-day period of prayer and fasting. During this time, church attendance and increasing our spiritual works, such as almsgiving, are very important. Then on Holy Pascha (Easter Sunday) people celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord with a feast, as was traditionally done in biblical times. In some countries, such as Greece, they usually celebrate with a lamb on the spit and by eating specially-dyed red eggs. The colour red represents the blood of Jesus and the egg represents new life breaking out of the shell (or tomb). Most Orthodox people around the world have real Easter eggs and use red dye to decorate their hard-boiled eggs. In recent years, some chocolate eggs have also become popular, especially for children. In Russia and Greece, the people usually prepare special Easter dishes to eat, and make Easter bread, such as "Tsoureki" bread in Greece.
