by an object blocking light
Transparent objects do not block light entirely, so they do not cast shadows as opaque objects do. They may create soft or colored shadows depending on how they refract and scatter light passing through them.
The colored shadows created when light passes through a hand typically consist of red, blue, and green. When the light is blocked by the hand, these colors mix in various ways to create different hues in the shadows. The phenomenon occurs due to the additive nature of colored light and the way our eyes perceive color. Each shadow can appear as a combination of these primary colors depending on the light source and its angles.

Shadows are simply an area that does not get as much light as the areas around it. That being said, if the object is totally opaque (or you can't see through it), then the shadow will simply be darker (usually a shade of black) because of the lack of light. If the object is transparent, on the other hand, then what light does go through will tint the light that does find it's way through the object.
Cast shadows from crater edges, etc, give the dark parts, while the uncratered highlands reflect light broad enough to appear light colored.

The dark-colored areas on the moon (maria) are flat, low-lying plains formed by ancient volcanic eruptions, while the light-colored areas (highlands) are rugged, elevated terrains made of older crustal material. The dark areas have fewer impact craters compared to the light areas, indicating they are younger in geological age.
