A computer obtains another computer's IP address in one of many ways. The most publicly recognized method is that through DNS, the domain name service, a network service implemented through a global system of linked computers that allow any computer to translate a name (e.g. www.Google.com.au) into the corresponding IP address. This is the system used with many aspects of the internet, but DNS is not limited to use with the (global) Internet, neither is DNS the only method to obtain IP addresses on the Internet.

While DNS is popular and frequently used, many other methods and protocols exist and are in active daily use which deliver information about other computers' addresses to your computer. For example, the DHCP service which runs in almost every network (for example through a small DHCP server running in your ADSL router device) not only assigns a (dynamic) IP address to your computer, it also informs your computer on a number of other computers' addresses: that of the best DNS servers to use, that of the gateway, possibly also that of NTP servers, proxy servers and others.

Other networking protocols such as SMB or NFS all contain processes which result in IP addressing information being delivered to your computer.

Some systems may also be designed to use built-in knowledge of other computers' addresses. While potentially less flexible, this method is often used for its simplicity, speed and lack of overhead. On Unix-style and Windows PCs, the hosts file provides a means to maintain lists of pre-defined name/address associations.

Your IP address is like your house address, but for your computer. It is used for other computers to know where your computer is located on the internet. What is IP address Explain how will you get IP address of a computer system?

an ip address is much like the address to your house. it lets other devices know where your computer is on the particular network. I.P stands for internet protocol. to get an ip address on a particular system on a local home network you go to your internet connection details and it will be listed under IPv4 or IPv6 depending on what kind of network you have. If you want to figure out the I.P for the router that will be listed under default gateway. If you want to find the I.P of your ISP's address they have given to your connection then go to whatismyip.com

How information is transferred from one computer to another on internet?

In order to transfer information across the Internet, a computer needs to first know the IP address (Internet Protocol - A postcode, if you would) of the computer that will bereceiving the data. Then the information is bundled intopackets, little packages of data with the IP address, other addressing and error-checking data and the actual information that is being sent. Then, these packets are sent down to your ISP (Internet service provider). From there it travels along the quickest path it can, across multiple networks, major servers, etc. (i.e. it goes across the Internet by the path it can find) until it reaches the computer it is intended to go to. The multiple routers and other pieces of network hardware help to 'point' the packet to the correct computer (this is where the IP address comes in.)For more info, here's a helpful linkhttp://computer.howstuffworks.com/question525.htm

When you request a webpage how do the text and graphics know how to get back to you?

Every computer on the Internet is assigned a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address that works like a return address on an envelope or caller ID on a phone. When a request for information is sent across the web, your computer's IP address is attached to that request. The receiving web server then directs the appropriate files to be sent back to the computer that originated the request.

How do you know the IP address of others computer form my computer?

To find another computer's IP address on your network, you can use a scanning program like "Advanced IP Scanner". You could also access your router and view a list of connected IPs from there. There is no simple way for you to find out the IP of another computer over the internet however. It would be best for the owner of the other computer to find out their IP themselves and then tell you.

What does an IP address do?

An IP address is a number that identifies your computer and the network area it is a part of. Every device directly connected to the internet has a unique address. Home and office machines typically have IP addresses that reflect the hierarchy of the network they are on. You can think of an IP address as being similar to a postal address. It describes where to send data so that it reaches it's destination.
