The phenomenon of buoyancy keeps large ships (and small ones) afloat. By building a strong hull and including sufficient volume within it, when it is placed in water, it will begin to sink. But it will only sink until it displaces a volume of water equal to the mass of the ship. At that point, the buoyancy of the water will keep it afloat.
If the ship is actually too heavy the ship will sink into the water below the mark for its waterline (see image above) and run the risk of sinking completely when exposed to waves as it travels to its destination.
The ship floats normally because it contains a large empty volume so that the ship displaces a volume of water that weighs more than the ship itself weighs, this excess displacement is called buoyancy.
