Cut--removes an object; similar to the backspace key
Copy--Saves an item in an invisible "clipboard".
Paste--Duplicate the item or text you saved on the clipboard.
They are different because copy you can paste on as many times as you want, but cut takes it right out of the document.
Use cut to remove and have the option to paste somewhere else (original is removed). Use copy to make a copy to paste somewhere else (original remains unchanged). It is important that you have the option, so you can perform the desired actions. A cut selection can be "Pasted Special" and transposed, turning rows into columns.
Commands that are not relevant at a particular time will be greyed out. For example, before you do a Paste, you must first have done a Copy or a Cut. If you haven't done either of those, then Paste will be greyed out. Once you Copy or Cut something, then Paste will become black and you can use it. If you have not done anything, then you cannot do an Undo, so it is greyed out. Redo will be greyed out until you have done an Undo. The same applies to many other commands. So commands will be grey or black, depending on what else you have done.
