It depends on the species. There are four species of river dolphin that live in freshwater, one that can live in both salt and freshwater, but most species can only swim in saltwater. Saltwater dolphins can swim in freshwater, but only for a short time; they are more buoyant (float better) in saltwater and will become exhausted in freshwater.
