An eating disorder affects the entire family. As a recovered anorexic, I saw the pain my family was in, watching me struggle each day. I was eventually hospitalized with bradycardia, a condition which caused my heart to beat 24 times a minute. My step mother and father were particularly helpful, and truly saved my life. They brought me to my therapy sessions each week, and helped me to overcome the most difficult struggle of my life. Without them, I wouldn't be here today. An eating disorder isn't just an individual struggle, it is a family affair. I honestly believe one can not recover from an eating disorder alone, so if you, or someone you know is struggling, be the one to save them. Or get yourself help. You can make it through it.
Aside from the sufferer, eating disorders can affect family and friends, who struggle to understand the causes and symptoms they are suffering. Eating disorders can make a person very stressed and angry, therefore this can put a huge strain on their relationships with the people around them.

Eating disorders aren't genetic. But, if you do have a family member who has or had an eating disorder, it is more likely that you will develop their habits later on in life. This doesn't mean you will automatically have an eating disorder, it just means that because you are used to their way of eating, it may be thought of as "the norm" so you might pick up on it more.
