Enzymes are biological catalysts, meaning they can speed up chemical reactions without being used up themselves.

They do this by breaking down molecules, the molecules that each enzyme breaks down are different and they are called the substrate, so simply, each different type of enzyme can break down a different substrate.

Enzymes have an area called an active site on them, this is where substrate is broken down.

They lower the Activation Energy of the biochemical reaction. Note that each enzyme may do this for only one 'specified' chemical [also biochemical] reaction: each one is absolutely specific as regards their substrates and products.

Enzymes help chemical reactions by lowering the energy required for a reaction to take place, the activation energy. The total energy change of the reactants to products, however, is unaffected. The enzyme just makes the transition easier to take place.
