Feathers keep birds warm and usually they also keep them dry. More importantly, they allow birds to fly. However, no bird that weighs more than 40 pounds is capable of flight. When feathers fall from the body they either feel relived or colder. Sometimes the feathers that fall are used for building nests.

All birds have feathers, and they have feathers for many reasons.

Feathers act as insulators to help the bird maintain its body temperature. Birds have muscles at the base of each feather that can make the feathers puff out or slick down tight against the bird's body. Holding the feathers one way allows air to circulate, which keeps the bird cool. Holding the feathers another way traps pockets of air that act as insulation to keep the bird warm. Birds can't sweat, and even though they can pant, it's not as effective as it would be for an animal that has saliva that evaporates to cool the animal off, so feather position is very important for cooling off.

Feathers can act as camouflage. The feathers of a wild budgerigar help camouflage them in their native Savannah environment. Much like zebras, their wiggly stripes also confuse predators who have trouble distinguishing one bird from another when they are in a large flock.

Feathers can impress other parrots, and attract mates. Parrots have better vision and can see a wider range of colors than humans can. Parrots can even see into the ultraviolet end of the light spectrum, and some parrots have plumage that reflects this. Humans can only see these ultraviolet markings with special Photography, but parrots can see them in normal sunlight.

Feathers help birds express themselves. A careful observer can tell how a parrot is feeling just by observing how it holds its feathers. This is most obvious with crested parrots like cockatoos, cockatiels and hawk-headed parrots, who will flare up their crest feathers when they are excited about something. Parrots will often also fan out their tail feathers when they are excited about something.

Most obviously, feathers help parrots fly. The long stiff feathers on the wings keep the bird aloft, the soft contour feathers keep the bird aerodynamic, and the tail feathers help the bird steer.
