A praying mantis adult female does its only duty to its young. This duty consists of guarding the egg case and laying it inside of a hardened protective case called an ootheca. Depending on the location, The Adult female then dies but the egg case is protected from all weather to the most part, except fire and too much water. In the rainforest, praying mantises live year long so they do guard the egg cases to the longest time possible. In the Western Hemisphere, the adult female dies two weeks after laying the egg case.
First, You should have a container ( I suggest a large Kritter Keeper) you can add a variety of plants in your Praying Mantid habitat and also mist it a lot to keep it moist. You can also add soil and have a water source. For my water source I used a bottle cap with small rocks in it with water so the Praying Mantis doesn't drown. Do not put the Praying Mantis food in your habitat this will not make them mate. After you've done this you may put your Praying Mantids in, if you do not know which is the male or female, the male is smaller and the female is bigger. This may take 1 hour or more for them to mate. Once they are done mating, immediately take the male out and put it in another cage. The female will start to lay eggs in a week.
