File compression programs make files smaller or combines files into one for smaller storage space. These programs take up less room in your computer memory or allow them to be put on devices such as zip drives.

File compression programs can be used to improve computer speed in a variety of ways and situations. One way is to compress things like log files, or older files that aren't accessed to often, backups and the like. Doing so will free up disk space which will generally improve performance. You can also compress files before uploading them or sending them to someone in order to improve the speed of the transmission of the files.

File compression programs reduce file sizes for easier transfer or storage. Compression programs can identify redundant (repeating) information and eliminate it during encoding. The encoding itself can be lossy or lossless. In the first case the redundant information is completely removed. Mp3 is a typical lossy compression type, where the information unrecognizable for the human ear is removed and the file size reduced.

How does compression work on a computer?

If you download many programs and files off the Internet, you've probably encountered ZIP files before. This compression system is a very handy invention, especially for Web users, because it lets you reduce the overall number of bits and bytes in a file so it can be transmitted faster over slower Internet connections, or take up less space on a disk. Once you download the file, your computer uses a program such as WinZip or Stuffit to expand the file back to its original size. If everything works correctly, the expanded file is identical to the original file before it was compressed. Most types of computer files are fairly redundant -- they have the same information listed over and over again. File-compression programs simply get rid of the redundancy. Instead of listing a piece of information over and over again, a file-compression program lists that information once and then refers back to it whenever it appears in the original program.

What type of programs reduce the amount of disk space a file requires?

These are called compression programs. They take a file (or a series of files) and compress the data. Be aware that compressing files does not always reduce the file size drastically, especially if the file has already been compressed or is in a compressed form such as some video formats. Trying to compress them can even result in a file being bigger than the original. Many of these programs accomplish compression by finding repeating fragments of characters or data, replacing it with a unique code, and include the code and data fragment into a dictionary in the resulting compressed file. Decompressing the file is done by extracting the dictionary, scanning the file for dictionary codes and replacing them with the data fragment. The most dramatic effect is when compressing many files into one archive. Compressing a single file often will have little effect on the amount of data it takes up on the hard drive. There are many programs that perform this function: WinZip, WinRAR, and 7Zip, zip, gzip are common and widely used. Some programs have options tospecify how thoroughly to scan the original file and how much compression should be attempted. The more compression desired, the longer it takes to scan and study a file. Some of the compression programs also allow specifying a password to be use for encrypting the file and the password is required to extract information afterwards. Microsoft Windows versions as well as some other companies offer the ability to compress a whole drive or directory.

Which utility program is used for file compression?

There are many programs that will do relatively the same thing. Some more known than others, and some for certain file formats. Because there are many file formats (.zip, .rar, .gz, .arj, .cab, etc....) sometimes you may need a specific utility for a format. The most common are .zip and .rar, but they are not necessarily the best.

What software can test the quality of a file compression?

There are many pieces of software that can test the quality of a file compression software. The file compression software itself can give a percentage of compression, as well as a verification of whether it is compressed properly. One can also check the 'checksum' of the file.

What is the highest compression ratio?

Compression ratio simply means the difference in size of the original vs compressed unit. Compression ratio is a commonly used term for internal combustion engine piston/cylinder compression and file compression. Ratios differ depending on the type of engine or the type of file being compressed. In file compression, 7zip has the highest compression ratio.
