Dreams communicate through symbols and metaphors. The persons, things, actions and even the surroundings in dreams all represent things different than what they appear to be, yet with similar qualities. For example, dreams often are set in the dreamer's home, which represents the dreamer's life. Different rooms of the home represent different aspects of life: work, family, social life, sexuality, etc. The upper floors of the home symbolize more intellectual and/or spiritual areas, while basements, cellars and underground chambers represent various levels of the past, or physical / animal concerns. Another important principle is that dreams are about the dreamer. For instance, a woman might dream of her sister being pregnant, when it is the dreamer herself who is expecting a child.
