Fishers, or Fisher Cats do not actually eat fish, despite their name! The name is actually derived from the French word "fichet" which meant the pelaged of polecats. So they have nothing to do with fish. They eat small mammals such as squirrels and rodents, and are the only natural predator of the porcupine (they chew upon its face until it dies and then roll it over to eat from the stomach.). They have also been reported, but never confirmed, to have caught deer and even elk! As omnivores, they may also eat berries and wild fruit and nuts.

Fisher cats do not travel in packs. They are loners who only associate with other fishers for mating purposes. They are most active during dawn and dusk hours of the day. The males are much larger than the females.

Fisher cats usually sleep high up in trees. This is where they spend most of their time, and prefer not to come down unless necessary.

Fishers are actually not cats but are members of the weasel family. They eat a variety of animals - anything they can overcome - rabbits, groundhogs, etc.
