Assuming you mean the flat disc with a hole for screws or bolts. I could not find any clear meaning of how this word came to be. It doesn't really have anything to do with washing (cleaning) anything. There is a reference to an old French word meaning screw. See related link.

On the 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera S ,V6, 3.3 some of the AC Compressors had O Rings & others used flat washers. That Year they used some with O rings & some with flat washers. I called the Chevrolet Dealer where I bought mine & that is what they told Me. The Auto Parts place said the same thing. You have to look at Your old Compressor to tell. Mine has the Compressor with flat washers!!
