Floods - Too much rain in a short period of time causes rivers and streams to

overflow onto nearby land in an event called a flood. Floods are very destructive

events for people and farm animals. They ruin property and kill animals and

people. Plants can usually survive floods. Flash floods have rushing water that

destroys everything in its path. These types of floods usually occur in areas of

hills or mountains where the water has a chance to run downhill into streams and

collect very quickly.

Floods are probably one of the worst occurrences to happen to those involved in any level of agriculture. They are almost impossible to predict and they destroy many acreages of crops, farms, and houses in a short amount of time.

Crops cannot be grown in fields that are flooded.Once a flood has a occurred, it is very difficult to dry large pieces of land for replanting. If the field is flooded even after seeding and the plants have started to come up, farm equipment can't get in to take care of the fungus and other diseases that are associated with flooding. Too much water for too long also either kills the plants or stunts their growth limiting harvest later in the fall. Often severe erosion through the force of the flood waters is also associated with flooding on cropland.

Flooding with regards to animal husbandry can make things challenging as well. Animals need to take shelter in areas of higher ground to ensure their safety and health, because if they do not and stay in the flood-prone areas, they will drown or be swept away by the flood waters. Feed may be an issue if it cannot be shipped by boat or aircraft to the flood-striken animals and if it is spoiled by being underwater. Diseases can also be transmitted to livestock, from several vectors including drinking the flood waters, the bacteria left after the flood waters have subsided, and even if they've been subjected to being almost swept away by the floods.

For farmers that rely on crops and animals for their own sustinance and survival, it could be disasterous for them, since they wouldn't have any food to feed themselves and their family during the winter or dry-season periods, nor would they have any source of income if their livestock and crops have been swept away and drowned. They would then have to scrape up the money to get food from somewhere else, or hope that their neighbors may be generous to share some of what they have left with them.

Flooding can create many concerns for all living life aside from drowning of course. Floods and in particularly, flash flooding can completely destroy roads and the ground with the water running on it creating unseen hazards from motorists and anything walking through the flood water. Flooding also commonly carries trash, waste and other harmful materials which can create a health hazard for any living thing in the area of the flooding. Flood water can also weaken structures including trees, homes, buildings and other objects.

Of course they do. They just have better means of knowing when a flood is on its way.

Marine animals in a flood will survive, but will have a hard time breathing for a few seconds because of the pressure building. Land animals may be caught an may drown.
