How do forests prevent flooding?

When it rains on cleared ground the water immediately starts to run towards creeks gully's and rivers the sudden movement downwards of water can lead to local flash flooding and heavy flooding further down stream especially if the river system is full already. However if it rains on a standing forest the trees or plants are responsible for holding an enormous amount of water. some of this water may eventually find its way to the rivers but it takes more time add to this water evaporating back into the air and disastrous floods can be averted.

Forests and any vegetation holds the soil together and stalls runoff of rainwater. This holds the water in the uppermost layer of composted material and keeps it from causing a flood.
