Like their name implies, fossil fuels are derived from organic material that was once part of a living thing. As organisms die and are buried in sediments, they are exposed to increasing pressures and temperatures that chemically alter them from animal remains into natural gas and oil deposits (and coal seams, as well).

Without being buried, without changing pressures and changing temperatures, fossil fuels would not form. Hence, they are found in rock because animals die and become buried in sediment, which then becomes rock.

This isn't strictly true! However, as fossil fuels, particularly coal, were laid down in sedimentary strata as a remnant of ancient forests and swamps, it follows that the deposits will be found in relatively flat land; and flat land is often low-lying and likely to become submerged.

(Note that the origins of oil are still not fully understood. Originally it was thought that oil originated in a similar process to coal formation; but it is now considered that oil is produced beneath the surface by the vast mass of subterranean bacterial organisms. If this theory is true, it means that oil continues to be produced today, but at a rate far less than the rate at which we consume oil).

Fossil Fuels are formed when dead matter, from both plants and animals, sinks to the bottom of the ocean or is buried into the soil and fossilises. The carbon from this fossilisation process, as well as the fossil itself, then decomposes and forms mainly either coal, oil or natural gas. These products are extracted from the Earth and utililised because they make excellent fuels in terms of the amount of heat and energy given off per unit of fuel when ignited.

So, to summarise, fossil fuels are extracted from the Earth because they are made there, and because they are excellent fuels.

Fossil fuels are formed in the underground when the remains of dead plants and animals are buried for a long time under the layers or sediments of earth. Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons, primarily coal, fuel oil or natural gas.

fossil fuels are basically bones that have rotted over time and the bone have then made a liquid in the ground and then scientists named this liquid fossil fuel (i think)
