Christmas in France is a holiday as in many western countries. Shopkeepers have their windows decorated and town councils decorate the streets, families set up their Christmas trees and Nativity scenes. Children write or draw their wish list of toys, and put their shoes next to the fireplace - or under the tree - on Christmas Eve. There is often a lavish family meal lasting into the night, called the "réveillon" (there is another one at New Year's eve, but the Xmas one is most often family-oriented).
No one HAS to celebrate Christmas. Most French do.
French Christians celebrate Christmas. French Jews celebrate Hanukkah.
The French celebrate Christmas during Winter. For Christmas they have the Christmas Eve Feast. The French enjoy their Christmas every year. Everybody look forward to Christmas.
