Hamstrings help by pulling the shin backwards when forward pressure is applied - such as when jumping or sprinting. If the hamstring didn't pull back and keep the shin in a vertical position, then pressure and shearing will occur within the knee joint on multiple tendons and ligaments.

What does your hamsting do?

The hamstrings cross and act upon two joints - the hip and the knee. They extend the hip, flex the knee and rotate the lower leg inward when the knee is bent. The hamstrings play a crucial role in many daily activities, such as, walking, running, jumping, and controlling some movement in the trunk.
