Well they don't. At least their homes don't! Hawaiians are now so accustomed to volcanic eruptions, that the ones living near the volcanoes build wooden houses at a small elevation from ground. So lava doesn't enter their homes. If they think it will, they take their precious belongings and run away. A wooden house isn't that costly, so they can leave it. Only once in modern times the volcano erupted with so much magma in volume that lava rivers flowed unstopped for miles ans miles. When they were about to reach the main city, bombers were deployed and the bombed the ground before the rivers, and lava flowed into the craters and froze...
