1. Remove one cable from the battery - preferably the negative side. 2. Jack up the front end of the truck and place stands underneath - a good placement for the stands is at the bottom mount of the shocks. 3. Your job will be easier/faster if the right (passenger side) front wheel is removed. 4. Six bolts hold on the bell housing cover (9/16" bolts) - two of these bolts, closest to the centerline of the vehicle, also have a separate braces (1/2" round stock) connected. Completely remove five of the bolts starting from the right side. The last bolt on the left side needs only to be loosened about 1/2" which is a good thing because the exhaust pipe is in the way for its complete removal. 5. The brace on the right needs to be at least completely detached. You've already removed the rear bolt in step #4, now remove the front bolt for this right brace under the front of the engine. You do not need to wrestle it out at this point since removal will be easier once the starter has been detached also. 6. Wiggle the bell housing down, pivoting on the left bolt still attached. 7. Remove two long bolts that mount the starter (1/2"). The starter will now drop down . 8. Remove the two wires to the solenoid. The new starter came with a large and small nut holding down these wires - 1/2" and 1/4" respectively. We had better luck getting the old nuts off using 13mm and 8mm wrenches/sockets respectively. 9. Install the new starter reversing the steps above. 10. Approximate time with two people - 1 1/2 hrs. Solo - 2 hrs.

How do you change the starter in a 99 sunfire 22 liter?

Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the electrical connections from the back of the starter. Remove the bell-housing cover. Remove the starter support bracket bolt from the engine block. Unfasten the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then carefully lower the starter. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the starter support bracket to the starter. To install: Transfer the starter support bracket to the new starter if the starter is being replaced. Raise the starter into position and secure the starter using the starter motor-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Install the starter support bracket-to-engine bolt to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm). Install the bell-housing cover. Install the starter electrical connections on the back of the starter. Tighten the S terminal to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm) and the battery terminal to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery
