A lot of what is written and claimed about lucid dreaming is fantasy. Many persons are not able to control their dreams at all, and of those who do become lucid (aware) in the midst of dreams, very few actually can have the sort of total control that is described on websites. This is particularly true of those websites that offer to teach you lucid dreaming for a fee.

Having said all of that, some individuals do have lucid dreams naturally. This is not something they are taught; it comes naturally to them. Other individuals can learn to become aware of their dreams, but this takes time and practice. There is nothing special to learn. One merely forms an intention - a determination- before going to sleep to be aware of dreams. Once one is able to do that, it is a matter of further practice and experimentation to make choices about the things happening in the dream and to change the direction of a dream.

For example, a person having recurring dreams of being chased by a gorilla could form a strong determination that the next time she is being chased, she will become aware that she is dreaming. Once she is successful, she can decide, while dreaming, to stop running and to confront the gorilla. In this way, lucid dreaming can be useful in resolving nightmares.

To address your other questions, lucid dreaming does not have any particular feeling. Each person's dreams are unique, so you will not feel the same way in a lucid dream as someone else might feel. You might feel that the things around you in the dream are vague and foggy, or you could feel they are quite concrete and distinct. Each dream is different and each dreamer experiences dreams differently.

There is no dependable method of knowing whether or not you are dreaming. Some "teachers" claim that you can recognize a dream by looking at a mirror or by trying to read something, or by pinching yourself, etc. That is all nonsense. Your dreams are produced by your own mind, which can quite literally dream up anything you can imagine. So your mind could easily allow you to see your reflection in a mirror or to read print on a page or anything else. Becoming aware in dreams simply takes practice.

Is it normal to be able to control your dreams if you just put up a dream catcher?

Do you control your dreams?

Your dream is based on your thoughts but what happens in the dream you can not control. There is also Lucid Dreaming where one completely controls the dream. This occurs when one becomes aware that they are dreaming and then are able to influence the imagery. Usually, the dreamer will eventually become aware that they are dreaming, but one can also go from a wakened state directly into a lucid dreaming state.

How can i have a dream that i want....?

Unfortunately, If you are asking about dreams that occur while you are sleeping, the answer is that you cannot have the dream that you want. Dreams that occur during sleep are involuntary. Their content and images are produced by your subconscious mind without conscious (voluntary) control. Some individuals are able to "incubate" a dream, in the sense of focusing on a particular subject before falling asleep. But even if that person succeeds in dreaming of the chosen subject, they do not have control over how that matter appears in the dream. Another method of trying to control dreams is "lucid dreaming," meaning becoming aware of dreaming while still asleep. There is great variation in the amount of control different individuals achieve in lucid dreams.

Can you dream while dreaming?

It is certainly possible to dream about dreaming. But the ability to control dreams and intentionally (consciously) move from one dream into another then another, or to move in and out of other people's dreams as portrayed in the film Inception, is pure science fiction fantasy. Is it possible to become deperessed from certain dreams and sometimes be able to realize your awake in dreams and control them?

When you have such dreams you are not in a complete REM state of sleep (deep sleep) and yes, certain dreams can depress you or even have you crying, sometimes waking up in fear and sweating or even laughing. Yes you can "realize that you're awake in dreams." This is called a lucid dream, a dream in which the dreamer is aware that s/he is dreaming. However, controlling the dream requires a lot of practice and patience to train the appropriate skills, such as remembering your dreams, and realizing that you're dreaming. There are several ways to do this, just research lucid dreaming. Is it not more or less a very deep form of day dreaming? I had a dream where I could control my surrogate but not my environment and this is what I attribute it to anyway.

How many different types of dreams are there?

There are two scientifically proven types of dreaming: * Normal Dreaming - which we all experience for an average of 100 minutes every night. The average person may only remember one dream per night but this can be improved by keeping a dream journal. * Lucid Dreaming - is a skill that anyone can develop by practicing certain memory techniques and raising their self-awareness. It requires the realization that you are dreaming in order to become conscious and control the dream itself. People have been having lucid dreams for thousands of years but it was only formally categorized in the 1970s. Some people claim (but it is not scientifically proven) to perform: * Precognitive Dreaming - dreams which predict the future. * Mutual Dreaming - where people meet up in a dream.
