Some behaviours that koalas have are:

  • When a male is marking his territory, he rubs his chest, which has a scent gland, on the tree bark
  • Males have loud mating calls, which attract female koalas
  • They tend to sleep 18-20 hours a day
  • They eat eucalyptus leaves almost exclusively, although they also eat eucalyptus blossoms, and sometimes bark: the leaves provide nutrients and moisture for the koala
  • Koalas have a home range of up to a square kilometre, consisting of many eucalyptus trees; consequently, they do not spend all their time in one tree, but often walk along the ground to change trees
  • While they are solitary animals, their home ranges overlap, so that several koalas might share the same tree

Their diet of certain types of gum tree leaves is said to make them drowsy most of the time. This is only because gum leaves are almost indigestible, and koalas have a naturally slow metabolism at best. They are more active at night and even, unfortunately, during the day when a koala in search of food may dart out onto the road. they can move reasonably quickly when they wish, but they do spend more time lazing in gum trees.

The koala lives almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves, buds and flowers. It rests motionless for during the day, sleeping for between 16 and 20 hours. Koalas spend about three of their five active hours eating and moving between their home trees, which may cover up to a range of one kilometre square. Feeding occurs at any time of day, but usually at night, as they are nocturnal. Koalas eat between 300 and 600 grams of eucalypt leaves each day.

Koalas generally avoid human contact. They are sedentary creatures that prefer to remain within the safety of their home trees, but they will readily pass by people on the ground, ignoring them, when moving between home trees. In extreme dry conditions, koalas in the wild have been known to seek human contact for water. They have followed bush walkers carrying water bottles, or wandered into backyards looking for a drink from a pool or a bucket.
