They hum. Humming to a cria is a sweet and gentle sound. Humming otherwise is usually a sign of agitation - take a llama away from its herd for the first time, or take its cria away from it, and it will hum a higher-pitched hum.

They also have a clicking noise they make when a strange llama approaches to tell it that the territory is taken - "This is MY space, and you're too close!'

Llamas have a loud, high-pitched whinny with clicks in it. This is an alarm call. My males might alarm call if several others in the herd are bullying them. They also alarm call when they see a strange dog, coyote or bear, and have alarm called at moose as well.
