Lobsters ( Homarus americanus) have two claws. One is a crusher claw which it uses to open shellfish such as clams and muscles to get at the tender meat inside. The other claw is a feeder claw or pincher which is more manoeuvrable and it brings the food to its mouth this way. Lobsters can also just feed by positioning its mouth close to its food which is how damaged ( clawless) lobsters can continue to eat. Spiney lobsters (Panulirus argus) do not have either the crusher or the feeder claw yet they eat well.
Lobsters often eat crustaceans that have hard shells but don't move too much. The lobster cracks them open like walnuts with their giant claws.
