Because most rocks are not made up of common geometric shapes, it would be difficult or impossible to find the volume of a rock using a ruler; there would be no easy way to measure the rock's irregular volume. However, by measuring the volume of liquid a rock displaces, its volume can easily be determined.
Fill a beaker or measuring cylinder with water and record the volume of water indicated. Put the rock in the beaker/measuring cylinder and record the new volume of water indicated. The difference between the two volumes is the volume of the rock.

You can measure the weight by placing the rock on a weighing scale, this will give the weight in grams. You can determine the volume by submerging the rock in a measuring cup partially filled with water and measuring how much the volume increases. This will give the volume in cm3 Now use the formula to calculate its density in g/cm3.
One way to find the volume of a large rock is to use the water displacement method. Fill a container with a known volume of water, then carefully lower the rock into the water. Measure the change in water level to determine the volume of the rock.

Use water displacement. Measure water before you put the rock in it, and then again afterwards. Put a measuring cup large enough to hold the rock in a pot large enough to hold the measuring cup and fill the measuring cup to the very top with water. Lower the rock into the measuring cup carefully so that the water flows over and into the pot. Carefully remove the measuring cup with the rock without spilling any additional water into the pot. When you measure the water in the pot it will equal to the volume of the rock (accuracy will depend on how careful you were). This is displacement measuring.

You could use a standard kitchen scale to measure out 10.5g of rock salt accurately. If you don't have a scale, you can estimate using measuring spoons, keeping in mind that 1 teaspoon of rock salt is approximately 6g.

You can find the volume of a small rock in no time at all. Just fill up a container that is marked by volume with water and record the volume. Then drop the small rock inside the container. Record the new volume. Find the difference between the new and old volumes. This is the volume of the small rock. You could do this in any liquid.
