Drug molecules can only be released when it passes through the rate-controlling membrane. A layer of drug compatible bioadhesive membrane is added to the outer surface of the polymeric membrane to increase contact between the skin and the transdermal therapeutic system. To control the drug release rate, the thickness of the membrane, the thickness of the adhesive, the composition of the polymer, and the permeability coefficient can be varied.
