They are born with them to excrete fecies, Urinate, breathe, eat, smell, reproduce and hear out of, with or through.
Also they can use there teath to gouge a hole in a wall ect... in order to make a house/nest to live in.

A mouse can protect itself in several ways. One way it can protect itself is to fit into very small holes when escaping a predator.
Probably it was not sealed all the way or had holes. Another reason is that it wasn't in there that long or it was supadupa Mouse!
