The night vision of domestic video cameras work by infra red.
All video cameras, whether using CCD or vidicon tubes, are sensitive to the invisible spectrum of infra red.
This feature is used on domestic cameras by using a high power, infra red emitting LED, on the front of the camera, to act as a floodlight.
No one can see it, but the camera can. When switching it on, it also increases the sensitivity of the CCD and as a result switches to black and white mode.
The infra red floodlight, lights up the subject, at close range and reflects back for the camera to see.
The infra red capabilities of a digital camera can be checked yourself. Look at the front of an infra red remote control and push a button. You won't see anything.
Now use your digital camera or phone camera. Point the remote control at the camera and press a button. You will now see the infra red LED on the remote flash white!
